Les petites choses is a piece derived from the love I have received throughout my years of living. The lyrics can be summarized by little acts of love that resonate deeply in my body. It was important for me to incorporate my Haitian culture by bringing in my adoration for the men and women who carry baskets of goods to sell, or to bring home to their families. Sitting with the image of my people inspired me to question the ways I carry love. What would I carry in a basket to display the deep appreciation and space I hold for another in my heart?
From the age of three, my father—who was born in Port-au-Prince, Ayiti—established my foundation of love through three simple acts: picking me flowers, writing me letters, and cutting fruit to share with me. It is that simple and seemingly little, but when placed in the basket, you can see the overflow of love and beauty they each hold.
Basket #1: Fruit that grew in my backyard + some additional favorites that my dad would cut and pass to me off the knife: banana, mango, orange, grapes, pineapple, apples.
Basket #2: Handwritten letters from lovers, friends, and family.
Basket #3: An array of colorful flowers that were picked with my father in mind.
