Him At Home

On the morning of my 24th birthday, Chaos and I got together to shoot. It was one of our first times hanging out since we met, so it was really sweet of him to allow me into his family home.
His room was open and bright, filled with so many relics that revealed a lot about who he was. Through our experience, I learned how kind and patient he was. I was still learning the camera we shot on, and he allowed so much space for that—I felt incredibly grateful.
It was the first time he had his picture taken since having top surgery, which felt extremely significant. Documenting queer Haitians is crucial to the validity of my own identity, and I hoped to reflect that in the images captured and gift that to Chaos. Our relationships to Haitian identity and culture are different—Chaos is fully Haitian, while I am only half. He grew up immersed in the culture, while I did not. When we met, I was drawn to him, and now I realize it’s because he serves as a link for me to connect to everything I’m still trying to piece together within myself.
To me, Chaos in Bloom is the essence of a queer Haitian self-becoming, captured in the delicate balance of a double exposure.

These artworks explore intimacy, beauty, and tenderness within the Haitian queer community. They reflect the beautiful emerging experiences of young queer individuals of Haitian heritage, emphasizing freedom of expression and joy—visions I hope to see for the future of Haiti.
Influenced by her Haitian mother, who passionately filmed beautiful family moments, and her African American father, who shared his love for moviegoing, Kelee actualized her creative journey at 15. She trained in digital photography and filmmaking at a film arts high school, later expanding her practice into analog photography and filmmaking, studying at the ICP and Mono No Aware.
Through her evocative storytelling, she invites viewers to explore the beauty hidden in the mundane, pushing for a deeper connection with the world around us.
