Les Cayes Marathon
IANKO JOSEPH, Les Cayes Marathon, 2023, Super 8 film
As a Haitian artist and documentarian, I find it paramount to highlight aspects of Haitian life that are rarely seen. The annual Les Cayes Marathon—organized by the Gaskov Clergé Foundation—is a powerful example of how Haitians continue to fight for normalcy in profoundly abnormal times. Documenting it is my way of sending a message to the world: we are still here—existing, resisting, and thriving.
Ianko Joseph is a multidisciplinary artist from Les Cayes, Haiti, working across image-making and music. Drawing inspiration from the West African diaspora, his work navigates the shared experiences of alienation, displacement, and the militarization of Black communities. At the same time, he captures the beauty and resilience within everyday life—honoring family, sunlight, culture, coastal landscapes, and the quiet poetry of the day-to-day.
In addition to his artistic practice and marketing work with Photo Dom NYC, Joseph is the founder of NCP Radio and a resident DJ at Oroko Radio. He also produces Souké, an annual fundraiser supporting the Gaskov Clergé Foundation in Haiti, reflecting his ongoing commitment to community-building through art and activism.
