Nikki's Rest
DAY BRIERRE, Nikki's Rest, 2024, Nichrome wire
My work aims to portray the mythical facets of Black female identity by engaging in an ongoing dialogue between painting and ceramics. I also focus on the symbolic act of repair, rupturing, and stitching narrative vessels to echo personal experiences of resilience and transformation.
In my practice, I employ a vibrant color palette, naive forms, and religious symbolism to explore the intersection of storytelling, ritual, and eco-feminist spirituality.
In my vision for the future of Haiti, the artistic community within the diaspora uses Haitian imagery and aesthetics to create new pathways of cultural reunion.
Day Brierre is a Haitian-born multimedia artist based in Chicago, Illinois. Her visual palette derives inspiration from Afro-indigenous myths and folklore. She uses a vibrant color palette, simplistic forms, and religious symbolism as a nod to my catholic upbringing in Port-au-Prince. Her works aim to portray the unseen realities and mythical aspects of the black female identity by crafting narrative vessels and two-dimensional works.
